When God Closes
One Door

Few stories illustrate closed doors more powerfully than Joseph's. Sold into slavery by his own brothers, falsely accused and imprisoned in Egypt, Joseph experienced door after door slamming shut on what seemed like a promising future. Every reasonable path to significance was closed to him.

Yet each closed door was quietly repositioning Joseph for something far greater. His time in Potiphar's house, his imprisonment, his ability to interpret dreams — all of it eventually led him to the position of second-in-command over Egypt, where he saved his family and an entire region from famine.

In Acts 16, Paul and his companions attempted to preach the gospel in the province of Asia, but Scripture records something striking — they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word there. They then tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow that either.

Two doors closed in a row. No explanation given at first. Then, that same night, Paul received a vision of a man from Macedonia pleading for help.

That redirection led to the founding of the church in Philippi and the spread of the gospel into Europe — a turning point in Christian history.

The book of Ruth opens with devastating closed doors: famine forces Naomi's family to leave their homeland, and then her husband and both sons die, leaving her widowed and without an heir in a foreign land.

Naomi even asked the people of Bethlehem to call her "Mara," meaning bitter. But what looked like an ending was actually the beginning of one of the Bible's most beautiful redemption stories. Naomi's daughter-in-law Ruth, a Moabite widow, followed her back to Bethlehem, where she met Boaz, married him, and became the great-grandmother of King David — and an ancestor in the lineage of Jesus Christ.

Even Jesus faced a closed door — in His own hometown. When He returned to Nazareth and taught in the synagogue, the people took offense at Him because they knew Him as "the carpenter's son."

Rather than forcing His way through a door closed by unbelief, Jesus moved forward, continuing His ministry in other towns and villages where people were ready to receive Him. The closed door in Nazareth didn't stop the mission — it simply redirected where the mission would bear fruit.

David was anointed king as a young shepherd boy, yet the door to the actual throne remained closed for over a decade. Instead, he spent years running from a jealous King Saul, hiding in caves, and living as a fugitive — despite already carrying God's anointing.

During this extended closed-door season, David wasn't idle or abandoned. He was being shaped — in character, in dependence on God, and in leadership — through the very delay that must have felt confusing and painful. When the throne finally did open to him, David was ready for it in ways he wouldn't have been as a teenager fresh from the anointing.
